Fresh Constitutional Debate Erupts After Aisha Yesufu’s Call For More FCT Lawmakers
Chieftain of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Aisha Yesufu, has argued that the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, deserves greater representation in the National Assembly, including three senators and at least six members in the House of Representatives.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Yesufu made the statement during a grassroots mobilisation event while discussing the political future of the FCT.
The human rights activist, who is seeking the FCT senatorial seat ahead of the 2027 general elections, noted that Abuja’s population exceeds that of at least 10 Nigerian states, while its landmass is larger than eight states.
According to her, the FCT has outgrown the era of having only one senator and should now enjoy broader representation at the National Assembly.
She stated, “The FCT has gone beyond the stage where we should still be struggling for just one senator. Abuja deserves three senators because it will benefit the entire territory.
“With more representatives, the people of Abuja will have stronger voices and better representation. Instead of just one person speaking for the FCT at the Senate, there will be three individuals representing the interests of the people.
“This is one of the major issues I intend to pursue if elected as senator. It may not be easy, but it is achievable.”
