The strained relationship between Shaibu and Governor Godwin Obaseki, who reportedly opposes his deputy’s gubernatorial ambitions, has been a focal point. Shaibu had previously approached an Abuja High Court to prevent Obaseki and the Edo State House of Assembly from impeaching him. Despite withdrawing the case following interventions, Shaibu remains at odds with the governor and currently operates his office outside the Government House in Benin.

Shaibu’s determination to vie for the governorship is evident in his ongoing consultations, campaign office setup along Airport Road, and the arrival of campaign vehicles. In a recent statement, Shaibu emphasized the urgent need for practical governance in Edo State, expressing concern about experimenting with leadership that lacks an understanding of the state’s politics and needs.

The deputy governor advocates for competence and experience as essential criteria for effective governance, highlighting the importance of someone who can hit the ground running and address the needs of the people from day one. In his view, avoiding experimentation with inexperienced leaders will prevent a scenario where the initial term is spent learning on the job, followed by attempts at embezzlement and personal business ventures in the subsequent term.
