From Football Pitch To Harvard Classroom: Xavi Simons Makes Bold Move During Injury Recovery
Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Xavi Simons has enrolled at Harvard Business School as he recovers from a serious knee injury that is expected to keep him out of action for an extended period.
According to Bush Radio Academy, the 23-year-old Netherlands international suffered a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee, an injury that has ruled him out for the remainder of the current season and could affect a significant portion of the next campaign.
With his return to competitive football expected to take considerable time, Simons has decided to use the period away from the pitch to pursue academic development and prepare for opportunities beyond his playing career.
The Tottenham midfielder has secured a place on Harvard Business School’s remote Crossover Into Business programme, which is designed to help professional athletes develop business knowledge and explore opportunities in other industries.
Announcing the development on LinkedIn, Simons explained that he wanted to make productive use of his recovery period while continuing to prioritise football.
“I’m going back to school. During my recovery, I’ve been trying to use my time in the best way possible. Football is still my main focus, but I also want to keep learning and improving away from the pitch,” he said.
The programme connects professional athletes with Harvard MBA students, offering participants opportunities to learn about business management, entrepreneurship and various industries.
Simons said his interests extend beyond the football field, adding that he hopes to gain a better understanding of the commercial side of the sport while developing skills that could benefit him in the future.
“I’ve always been interested in more than just football. I want to understand the business side of the game better, learn from people in different industries and keep developing as a person,” he stated.
As part of his rehabilitation in the United States, the Dutch midfielder also visited Harvard’s campus in Boston, where he met Professor Anita Elberse.
Simons had previously met Elberse during his time at Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, making the visit another opportunity to reconnect while pursuing his academic interests.
The decision to enrol at Harvard highlights the midfielder’s determination to remain productive during his recovery, even as he faces a challenging period away from professional football.
Although his immediate priority remains returning to full fitness, the business programme could also help him prepare for life after football and explore opportunities within the wider sports industry.
