Fury Unleashed: NLC, TUC Accuse Government Of Hijacking Trade Unions

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has fiercely criticized what it terms as ongoing interference by the government and security agencies in the internal affairs of trade unions across the country.

NLC President, Joe Ajaero, raised the alarm on Thursday while hosting the newly elected leadership of the Radio, Television and Arts Workers Union (RATTAWU) at the Congress headquarters in Abuja.

This strong stance follows the Federal Government’s endorsement of the 2025 National Industrial Relations Policy (NIRP), aimed at regulating union operations and minimizing frequent industrial strikes.

Ajaero described the interference as a violation of international labour protocols, asserting that trade unions are autonomous institutions governed by internal laws recognized by the International Labour Organisation (ILO).

He declared, “In no part of the developed world is government intrusion in union affairs tolerated. The ILO is closely observing Nigeria’s conduct. Unions must be allowed to operate independently without interference in their formation, management, or internal functions.”

Ajaero further recalled the involvement of security agencies in resolving internal RATTAWU matters months earlier, while also condemning government meddling in workers’ welfare funds handled by the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) and National Pension Commission (PenCom).

In a show of unity, the Trade Union Congress (TUC) President, Festus Osifo—represented by Secretary-General Dr. Nuhu Toro—affirmed that both NLC and TUC are united in defending the rights of Nigerian workers.

“The TUC stands for unity and collective strength. By working together, we can boost our voice and push for justice, fairness, and better conditions for all Nigerian workers. We also recognize the divide-and-rule tactics often employed by employers to weaken our ranks, but united, we can overcome,” Toro stated during the reception of the new RATTAWU leaders.

Ajaero concluded by warning against union members who exploit security forces to settle personal scores, stressing that the labour movement must remain self-governed, united, and resistant to external manipulation.
