Gambari Calls For Devolution Of Power, Urges States To Take ControlProfessor Ibrahim Gambari, former Chief of Staff to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, has called for greater decentralization of power between the federal and state governments. The distinguished diplomat argued that the concentration of power at the federal level is excessive, a situation he attributes to Nigeria’s prolonged years of military rule.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking as a guest on Inside Sources with Laolu Akande on Channels Television, Gambari emphasized the need to re-evaluate the exclusive and concurrent lists, suggesting that state governments should take on more responsibilities while local governments are strengthened.
“We must decentralize power,” Gambari said. “The power of the central government has become too concentrated. We need to find a way to decentralize, not necessarily by creating more states or local governments, but by giving states control over areas they can manage competently, such as education and agriculture.”
He went on to explain that the current power imbalance is not a coincidence but a legacy of military rule, where military heads of state handpicked governors. However, with Nigeria now in a democratic era, Gambari believes it’s time to reconsider which matters belong on the exclusive or concurrent lists.
“Local government autonomy is a good step,” he added, “but it’s not just about financial resources. Strengthening the capacity of local governments and improving the process by which local government leaders are chosen is essential. Without these reforms, the money allocated to them may simply be wasted.”
Gambari also spoke on Nigeria’s role in Africa, stressing that the nation’s future is critical to the continent’s progress. “The future of Africa depends on Nigeria. By 2050, Nigeria will be the most populous country in the world, and we are already the most populous in Africa. It’s not too late for Nigeria to thrive. I believe the Almighty has a purpose for the large population here, and we cannot be ignored globally,” he said.
