The signing ceremony, held at FCCPC headquarters, featured addresses from Dr. Aminu Maida, NCC Executive Vice Chairman, and Mr. Tunji Bello, FCCPC Executive Vice Chairman/CEO. Both leaders reaffirmed their dedication to creating a consumer-centric and competitive telecom landscape.
Dr. Maida hailed the MoU as a significant achievement following extensive collaboration between the two bodies. “In a rapidly evolving digital era, partnerships like this are essential to ensure fair practices and robust consumer protection,” he stated. He noted that the agreement would reduce regulatory uncertainty, enhance stakeholder confidence, and align with the federal government’s Ease of Doing Business initiative.
Key areas of focus include curbing market abuses, addressing consumer rights violations, and tackling challenges in Nigeria’s digital economy.
Mr. Bello emphasized the importance of regulatory harmony, underscoring the need for seamless collaboration to resolve consumer issues effectively. He cited the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) of 2018, which mandates cooperation between the FCCPC and sector-specific regulators like the NCC.
“The MoU demonstrates our shared commitment to eliminating regulatory conflicts and creating a streamlined process for addressing consumer concerns,” he remarked.
The partnership reflects President Bola Tinubu’s vision of promoting economic growth, improving market efficiency, and prioritizing consumer welfare. Both leaders expressed optimism that the collaboration would set a benchmark for other industries to establish similar agreements with the FCCPC, fostering comprehensive consumer protection across sectors.
As the ceremony concluded, Dr. Maida urged stakeholders in the telecommunications industry to embrace the spirit of collaboration symbolized by the MoU, envisioning a future of innovation, inclusivity, and sustainability for Nigeria’s telecoms sector.
