The video, reportedly from 2022, revealed Minister Kakubo promising to sell lucrative mineral mines to Chinese businessmen. However, after failing to fulfill the alleged agreement, the incriminating footage surfaced, leading to his resignation.

In response, Kakubo cited a desire to avoid distracting President Hakainde Hichilema’s administration as the reason for stepping down. He vowed to provide accurate context surrounding the scandal in due course.

President Hichilema promptly accepted the resignation, acknowledging Kakubo’s commendable contributions and leadership as a minister.

The incident highlights the prevalence of bribery in African politics, reminiscent of similar scandals in Ghana and Nigeria. Notably, Nigerian politician Umar Ganduje faced a bribery scandal in 2018 but chose not to resign, maintaining political influence.
