During a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, NOGASA’s National President, Mr. Benneth Korie, emphasized the detrimental effects of excessive and double taxation. “Multiple taxation is a major concern, and it is crucial that the government addresses this issue to foster a fairer business environment,” Korie said.
In addition to taxation, Korie addressed other significant issues including the availability of refined petroleum products, agricultural development, transportation infrastructure, and combating smuggling. He praised Aliko Dangote, President of Dangote Group, for his role in establishing Nigeria’s largest refinery, which he believes will enhance supply, competition, and the overall economy.
Korie recommended that Dangote’s refined products be made available to a broader range of stakeholders such as the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Trading, NNPC Retail, and various petroleum marketers’ associations. He argued that inclusive distribution would ensure more widespread and sustainable availability of products across the country.
Regarding smuggling, Korie advocated for a redesign of distribution channels and better security measures at border points. He called for improved support for security agencies, including the provision of necessary equipment and drones for surveillance to combat smuggling and theft.
On the topic of economic stability, Korie urged the government to focus on agriculture as a solution to inflation and food security challenges. He recommended increasing subsidies for agricultural inputs and equipment, emphasizing that enhancing budget allocations for agriculture and promoting cluster farming could significantly improve food production.
