Ghana Faces Three-Week Power Outage As Gas Supply From Nigeria Slashes

Authorities in Ghana have announced a three-week period of power cuts due to a shortage of gas supply from Nigeria. According to a statement from the state power firm, the temporary shutdown of maintenance works at an unnamed Nigerian gas supplier is responsible for this development.

In a joint statement by the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), it was explained that the maintenance works in Nigeria are expected to last three weeks. This situation has led to a decrease in Ghana’s overall power generation capacity, necessitating load management measures during this period.

The statement acknowledged recent power supply interruptions in various parts of the country, linking them directly to the reduced gas supply from Nigeria since June 12.

Apologizing for the inconvenience caused, the authorities assured the public of their efforts to collaborate with stakeholders across the power value chain. Their aim is to optimize available resources to minimize the impact of the gas supply reduction on consumers.
