Global Crisis: 120 Million People Forced From Homes By War And Violence, UN Finds

The UN declared Thursday that a staggering 120 million people are forcibly displaced due to war, violence, and persecution, labeling the escalating figure a damning indictment of global conditions.

According to the United Nations refugee agency UNHCR, global forced displacement has broken records once more, driven by conflicts in regions like Gaza, Sudan, and Myanmar, compelling more individuals to flee their residences.

In a statement, UNHCR highlighted that the worldwide displaced population now equals Japan’s entire population.

“Conflict continues to be a major catalyst for large-scale displacement,” stated UN refugee chief Filippo Grandi during a press briefing.

As per UNHCR’s report, the number of displaced individuals stood at 117.3 million by the end of last year, surging to an estimated 120 million by April’s conclusion.

This marks an increase from 110 million a year ago, representing twelve consecutive years of rising displacement, nearly tripling since 2012 amidst evolving crises and unresolved longstanding issues, UNHCR noted.
