In a move that took many by surprise last week, President Tinubu of Nigeria appointed a recent university graduate to head the newly reconstituted board of the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA). CONTINUE READING

The new chairman, Engr. Imam Ibrahim Kashim Imam, boasts an impressive academic record. Born on December 27th, 1998, he graduated with a first-class degree in Mechanical Engineering from Brighton University, followed by a master’s degree with honors from the same institution. Imam completed his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program in August 2022.

However, this appointment hasn’t been without its critics. A significant number of Nigerians feel that Imam, despite his stellar academic credentials, may lack the experience required for such a key position.

One Twitter user pointed out the formalities associated with the engineering profession in Nigeria: “Quick one for engineers here as per engineering in society, before you can be called Engr, you must have registered with COREN and other affiliated bodies like NSE. Also, you must have a work experience for a certain number of years. Abi all those ones na for poor Engr. Grad.” CONTINUE READING

Another critic was more direct in their disapproval, stating: “This appointment is not worth it. A fresh graduate to oversee the entire FERMA board. Absolutely unworthy.”

However, it’s essential to highlight that President Tinubu’s administration has been notable for the inclusion of young talents in key positions, a feat that hasn’t been witnessed at such a scale in the country’s political history.
