Speaking to State House correspondents on Thursday after a meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Alia underlined the state’s focus on prevention rather than reactive responses. He highlighted that the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) is fully equipped and ready to handle any flood-related emergencies.
Alia also mentioned that discussions are ongoing regarding the dredging of the river, with the state exploring the best options before seeking support from the federal government. He clarified, “We’re not just thinking about what to do when the floods come; we’re already prepared. We are raising awareness among our people. Before the dredging, several solutions are being considered to address the situation.”
He stressed that SEMA is fully capable and ready to manage any challenges, adding, “We hope the flood doesn’t come, but if it does, we are ready to tackle it.”
The governor acknowledged the ongoing issue of residents living in flood-prone areas, explaining a twofold approach that involves both appealing to residents to relocate and making them aware of the risks. “When you encounter such people, you appeal to them. If they don’t heed the warnings, they take the risk,” Alia stated.
