The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Professor Joseph Utserv, announced the Federal Government’s intention to construct dams nationwide to alleviate the severe impact of flooding. He made this revelation during the inauguration and handover ceremony of the Idye River Basin erosion control and hydraulic drainage project in Makurdi, Benue State.

Representing the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, Utserv highlighted the importance of water infrastructure in national development, emphasizing that the initiatives are part of a broader strategy to ensure sustainable water management across Nigeria. He underscored the government’s commitment to involving all sectors of society in achieving these goals.

In his address, Senator Akume praised the project as a significant step toward mitigating flood challenges in Makurdi. He commended the National Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC) for its efforts in addressing environmental degradation and fostering community development in Nigeria’s hydroelectric power zones.

Managing Director Abubakar Yelwa of N-HYPPADEC reiterated the devastating effects of recent floods, noting the destruction of thousands of homes and farmlands in 2022 alone, which displaced over 130,000 people in Benue State. He emphasized the urgent need for proactive measures to protect vulnerable communities from future calamities.

Governor Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia of Benue State emphasized the region’s vulnerability to flooding due to its geographical location and climate conditions. He hailed the Idye flood control and dyke project as essential for safeguarding both agricultural productivity and the livelihoods of residents.

The ongoing flooding crisis, exacerbated by factors such as heavy rainfall and poor urban planning, underscores the urgency of these infrastructure projects. The Federal Government’s commitment to constructing new dams aims to mitigate these risks, ensuring sustainable development and environmental protection across Nigeria.
