Government Releases Details On Agreements Reached With Organized Labour

Following a 14-day ultimatum issued on February 8 by the NLC and TUC, citing concerns over the escalating cost of living and the non-fulfillment of a 16-point agreement from October 2, 2023, the minister assured that substantial progress had been made. The mentioned agreement encompassed the payment of a N35,000 wage award for six months, the establishment of a Committee on Minimum Wage review, and the provision of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) powered buses, among other points.

According to Onyejeocha, the federal government has disbursed the N35,000 wage award for four months, and the remaining two months are currently in the processing stage. Additionally, the Committee on Minimum Wage review has been inaugurated, with discussions underway. The government has also initiated talks with relevant stakeholders regarding various tax incentives.

The minister emphasized the government’s commitment to engaging in social dialogue with organized labor and stakeholders to achieve industrial peace and prioritize workers’ welfare. Notable achievements include the immediate suspension of Value Added Tax (VAT) on Diesel for six months starting October 2023. The provision of CNG buses and conversion kits has seen significant financial commitments, with plans for their imminent deployment to address transportation challenges.

Addressing concerns about the leadership crises within the NURTW and RTEAN, the government intervened, and the matter has been resolved amicably. The Lagos State Government was assigned to address the issue, resulting in the inauguration of the Executive Body of the Union and the resolution of all contentious matters.

On outstanding salaries and wages for tertiary education workers in federally-owned educational institutions, the government has fully paid four months’ outstanding salaries to ASUU, with actions ongoing for other unions. Moreover, a substantial number of households, including vulnerable pensioners, have benefited from the N25,000 monthly conditional cash transfer, amounting to N68.3 Billion before the temporary suspension of the program.

Regarding the subsidized distribution of fertilizers to farmers nationwide, the government has made considerable progress to ensure effective distribution, thereby boosting agricultural production. The minister concluded by affirming the government’s dedication to fulfilling its commitments and fostering positive collaborations with relevant stakeholders.
