Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has revealed that the fate of his deputy, Philip Shaibu, in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the upcoming Edo State governorship election in September 2024 will be determined by the party itself.
Governor Obaseki made this statement following a closed-door meeting with Bauchi Governor Bala Mohammed and former Akwa-Ibom State Governor Udom Emmanuel.
Philip Shaibu had declared his interest in the 2024 governorship election in Edo State earlier in the week.
Governor Obaseki, while addressing the issue, emphasized that the decision regarding the party’s ticket for the governorship election lies with the PDP. He stated, “The party will decide, and also members of the party will decide who will be the flag bearer of the party in the forthcoming governorship election.”
Despite Shaibu’s declaration, Obaseki maintained a neutral stance, noting that as a Nigerian, Shaibu has the constitutional right to run for the office. However, the governor clarified that his vote alone would not determine the party’s flag bearer, highlighting the collective decision-making process within the party.
The purpose of the meeting in Bauchi, as explained by Governor Obaseki, was to discuss party politics and national issues. The governor stressed the need for leaders to provide solutions, particularly in addressing the removal of fuel subsidy and its impact on the cost of living. Obaseki urged leaders to focus on practical measures to alleviate the suffering of Nigerians and enhance the unity of the country.
As the year draws to a close and concerns about rising food prices persist, Governor Obaseki called on PDP governors to collaborate on strategies to mitigate the challenges faced by the people and ensure a better future.
