Governor Mbah Launches Minimum Wage Committee With One-Month Deadline

The Committee, launched on Thursday at the Government House in Enugu, is chaired by Head of Service Kenneth Ugwu. Sandra George from the Office of the Secretary to the State Government will serve as Secretary, and other members include Dr. Nathaniel Uramah, Commissioner for Finance and Economic Development; Pharm Chika Ugwuoke, Commissioner for Labour and Employment; and Mr. Anthony Okenwa, Accountant-General of the state.

Labor representatives on the Committee include Comrade Fabian Nwigbo, Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Enugu State chapter; Comrade Benedict Asogwa, Chairman of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) state chapter; Comrade Ezekiel Omeh, Chairman of the Public Service Joint Negotiating Council; and Comrade Udaya Ani, Chairman of the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) state chapter.

During the inauguration, Governor Mbah reaffirmed his commitment to workers’ welfare and emphasized the need for the Committee to engage with relevant stakeholders, including Ministries, Departments, and Agencies. He stressed the importance of worker motivation and the timely implementation of the new minimum wage.

Governor Mbah stated, “We have set ambitious targets, and achieving them depends on having a motivated workforce. This Committee’s task is crucial, and we have selected its members with great care. We expect a thorough review of salary structures and a detailed report within a month to expedite the implementation of the new minimum wage.”

Kenneth Ugwu, Committee Chairman, assured the governor that the Committee would exceed expectations in both timeliness and quality. He promised that the recommendations would align with the governor’s vision for a motivated and productive public service.

Comrade Benedict Asogwa of the TUC remarked that Governor Mbah’s prompt action was anticipated, noting the governor’s history of wage awards and recent promises to enhance salaries for health professionals. He expressed confidence that the Committee’s work would lead to improved financial conditions for Enugu workers.
