Usman Okai Austin, the House of Representatives candidate for Dekina/Bassa Federal Constituency in the upcoming 2023 general election, has strongly criticized Kogi State Governor Usman Ododo and his administration for the alleged deduction of 20 percent from the salaries of local government staff.
According to reports, Governor Ododo purportedly sanctioned the deduction, resulting in local government staff receiving only 80 percent of their rightful earnings.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Okai urged Governor Ododo to transparently address the allegations and promptly take corrective measures. Emphasizing that the welfare of all citizens, regardless of their ethnicity, should be the primary concern of any responsible administration, Okai asserted the need for accountability.
He stated, “We must demand transparency from our government and refuse to tolerate any form of corruption. It is our collective responsibility to speak out against injustice and ensure that those in power are held accountable for their actions.”
Okai underscored that the issue should not be viewed through the lens of tribalism or bias but rather as a matter of accountability and transparency in governance. Regardless of tribal affiliations, he urged unity in condemning corruption within the government and reiterated that the welfare of all citizens should be a top priority for any responsible administration.
Highlighting the severe implications of such salary deductions, Okai emphasized that it not only undermines the livelihoods of workers but also violates their rights as employees. He concluded by characterizing the alleged actions as a betrayal of the trust placed in the government to manage public resources fairly and equitably.
