Governor Takes Action After Fatal School Building Collapse Leaves 22 Dead, 132 Injured

“It is regrettable what has occurred, but it necessitates the immediate closure of this school. We cannot risk further incidents, and this sends a clear message, particularly to private school owners,” Governor Mutfwang stated.

He announced plans for a comprehensive technical audit of all schools to assess their structural integrity, ensuring they meet safety standards for habitation.

The tragic incident occurred during school hours on Friday, resulting in fatalities being transported to various morgues, while the injured are receiving treatment at multiple hospitals across Jos. Commissioner Musa Ashoms of the Plateau State Ministry of Information and Communication confirmed that 154 individuals were rescued, with 22 fatalities reported as of Friday evening.

Governor Mutfwang has instructed hospitals in Jos to prioritize treatment for victims, regardless of their documentation or ability to pay.

Earlier, the governor had visited the collapsed two-storey structure, noting its inadequate construction standards and proximity to a riverbank. He urged other schools with similar issues to cease operations immediately to safeguard lives and comply with state regulations.

“We urge other schools with similar deviations from building plans to shut down in the interest of public safety. A committee has been established to ensure compliance,” Commissioner Ashoms emphasized.
