The attack adds to the rising security concerns in Okigwe, as the same group of criminals is suspected to be responsible for the recent assault on the Correctional Service in the area. This earlier incident involved the release of prisoners, the killing of a police inspector, and the abduction of the officer in charge of the center.

The situation in Okigwe has escalated to the point where it is described as a war zone, causing widespread fear among residents. Many youths have fled the area to avoid the threat of violence. Expressing concern about the state of security, a local resident remarked, “Our security agencies are not doing enough to combat crimes in the state, yet there are so many security personnel in this area.”

Senator Patrick Ndubueze, an APC member, currently serves in the National Assembly after winning the elections held on February 25, 2023.

Confirming the incident, Henry Okoye, the spokesman for the Imo state police command, stated that the state commissioner of police, Aboki Danjuma, has initiated the formation of a tactical team to pursue and apprehend the attackers.
