Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, explained the delay, stating that the bagging process is underway at seven strategic locations across the country. Onanuga noted that the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) is overseeing the bagging of grains, ensuring their imminent delivery to vulnerable Nigerians.

In a statement issued on Friday, Onanuga reassured the public that free grains would soon be distributed, adding that the federal government plans to provide an additional 60,000 metric tonnes of rice. He emphasized that the grains, currently being bagged in strategic reserves, faced a delay due to the recent order for bags by the government, which will be provided to Nigerians free of charge.

Onanuga highlighted the government’s commitment to supporting the vulnerable population, stating, “The Tinubu administration, through the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, is in the final stages of releasing 42,000 metric tonnes of assorted food commodities to support the vulnerable population across the country.” He also pointed out that the announcement of impending food releases has already led to a noticeable reduction in commodity prices in major grain markets, as confirmed by Agriculture Minister Senator Abubakar Kyari.

As part of the relief efforts, the Federal Government plans to purchase 60,000 metric tonnes of milled rice from Mega Rice Millers. This initiative aims to alleviate the economic burden on Nigerians grappling with the high cost of food, demonstrating the government’s commitment to addressing food insecurity and promoting affordability.

In related news, the announcement of impending food releases has coincided with a reduction in commodity prices in major grain markets, signaling a positive impact on the nation’s food accessibility.
