According to a report by LIB, the horrifying incident occurred on July 1, 2025. The Greater Sudbury Police confirmed that the suspect, Lucky Ogbejiele, stabbed his mother-in-law to death and inflicted multiple serious—but non-life-threatening—injuries on his wife.
At the time of the attack, the couple’s two children were present in the home but were unharmed.
Lucky fled the scene but was found the next day hiding in a wooded area, suffering from what appeared to be self-inflicted wounds. He has since appeared in court and remains hospitalized at Health Sciences North.
Lydia recounted the traumatic experience through a heartfelt post on a GoFundMe page created to raise funds to return her late mother’s remains to Nigeria for burial. The fundraiser has so far generated over $19,000 CAD.
Describing the event as a “tragic and unthinkable” nightmare that has changed their lives forever, Lydia wrote:
“Hi, my name is Lydia, and I am reaching out with a heavy heart to ask for your support during the most devastating time of my life. On July 1, 2025, my dear mother—who had traveled from Nigeria to support me and my kids—was brutally taken from us in what should have been a joyful family moment.”
She explained that she had just returned from work when she saw her husband outside in his work uniform. After questioning him, he followed her back into the house, claimed he had resigned from his job, locked the door, and launched a vicious knife attack on her.
“He stabbed me in the stomach, neck, shoulder, hand, and head. I fought for my life and managed to escape, not knowing that he had already murdered my mother inside the house.”
Describing her late mother as a kind, peaceful woman who brought love to everyone, Lydia expressed the deep sorrow felt by her family, especially her father and siblings, who are awaiting her repatriation for burial in Nigeria.
Now a mother of two and survivor of this harrowing ordeal, Lydia is seeking support to cover the high costs of repatriating her mother’s body and handling funeral expenses.
“Any help—no matter how small—would mean the world to me and my family. Thank you for reading, sharing, and supporting us in this painful time. May God bless you.”
The story has sparked widespread sympathy and support, both online and within the Nigerian community in Canada.
