Heartbreak For Eagles! Crystal Palace Crash To Conference League After Europa League Blow
The decision, confirmed on Friday by UEFA, arises from American businessman John Textor’s ownership stakes in both Crystal Palace and French club Olympique Lyonnais — both of which qualified for the Europa League.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
According to UEFA’s rules, clubs with shared ownership that exceeds a certain level of control cannot compete in the same European competition to avoid conflicts of interest. Textor controls 77% of Lyon via Eagle Football and owns a 43% stake in Palace. Despite Palace’s claim that Textor does not exercise significant control over their operations, UEFA dismissed the argument.
“UEFA’s multi-club ownership rules are in place to preserve the integrity of our competitions,” the body stated. “Clubs must demonstrate that they are not jointly involved in any way in the management, administration, or sporting decisions of another club also competing.”
With Lyon finishing sixth in Ligue 1 and Palace securing European qualification through their FA Cup win — despite finishing 12th in the Premier League — UEFA gave Lyon priority for the Europa League spot. Palace will now compete in the third-tier Conference League unless an appeal changes the ruling.
Crystal Palace are reportedly preparing to contest the decision at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). If their appeal fails, Nottingham Forest — who placed seventh in the Premier League — could be in line to take their place in the Europa League.
