HON. MINISTER OF REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT, ENGR. ABUBAKAR MOMOH, FNSE, CONDEMNS KILLINGS IN OKPEKPE AND OVIA, REASSURING CITIZENS OF GOVERNMENT SUPPORT

The Honourable Minister of Regional Development, Engr. Abubakar Momoh, FNSE, strongly condemns the brutal killings of innocent farmers in Okpekpe, Etsako East Local Government Area, and Ovia South West Local Government Area of Edo State. The heinous attacks, allegedly carried out by suspected armed herdsmen/militants , are reprehensible acts that undermine peace, security, and the fundamental right of citizens to live and work without fear.

The Minister decries the gruesome murder of two able-bodied men in Okpekpe, Etsako East LGA, calling on the Edo State Government and security agencies to intensify efforts in fishing out the killers and bringing them to justice. He emphasizes that such acts of brutality must not go unpunished.

Furthermore, the Minister expresses deep sorrow over the tragic loss of twenty-two (22) lives in the massacre at Ovia South West LGA. This senseless act of violence is a painful reminder of the persistent security threats faced by farming communities in the region. He strongly condemns the unwarranted killings and calls for swift justice to be served against the perpetrators of these horrific crimes.

He highlights the growing security threat posed by criminal elements operating in the forests between Ajaokuta, Okpella, North Ibie, and Wanno, stressing the urgent need for constant surveillance and security intervention in these areas. These forested regions have become a haven for bandits and other criminal groups, and proactive measures must be taken to dismantle their operations.

The Federal Government considers the security and well-being of every Nigerian a top priority. Such barbaric acts of violence have no place in a civilized society and will not be tolerated. We stand in solidarity with the government of Edo State, the people of Okpekpe and Ovia, and the bereaved families in this moment of grief.

The Honourable Minister acknowledges the efforts of the Edo State Government, led by Governor Monday Okpebholo, in tackling insecurity and ensuring the safety of citizens. He calls on security agencies to swiftly investigate these tragic incidents, apprehend the perpetrators, and bring them to justice.

As the planting season approaches, the Minister reassures the people of Edo North, Edo South, and all affected communities that the government is committed to deploying every necessary security measure to safeguard farmers and residents. He urges communities to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies to enhance intelligence gathering and crime prevention.

The Ministry of Regional Development remains dedicated to fostering peace, security, and sustainable growth in all regions. We will continue to collaborate with relevant stakeholders to ensure that our rural communities are protected, empowered, and supported in their economic activities.

The Minister extends his deepest condolences to the families of those murdered in Okpekpe and Ovia, praying for strength and comfort in this difficult time. The Federal Government will continue to work closely with the Edo State Government and all security agencies to ensure that such tragic occurrences are prevented in the future.

Signed:

Engr. Abubakar Momoh, FNSE
