The House of Representatives has rejected the proposed increase in electricity tariff, following Honourable Aliyu Madaki’s presentation of a motion expressing strong disapproval of the price hike. The lawmakers were particularly concerned about the recent rise in petrol prices, which has already burdened many Nigerians.
Honourable Madaki highlighted the inappropriateness and insensitivity of introducing such a significant tariff increase at a time when citizens are still grappling with the impact of the petrol price surge.
In response, the House mandated its committee on power, once constituted, to engage in discussions with the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC). The objective is to seek a mutual understanding and find a middle ground to address the proposed tariff hike, taking into account the current economic challenges faced by the populace.
The lawmakers reiterate their commitment to safeguarding the interests of Nigerians and ensuring that decisions made by regulatory bodies align with the welfare of the citizens.
