House Of Reps Engages ICPC And CCB To Discuss Operational Strategies

The meeting, held at the National Assembly on Wednesday, was chaired by Kayode Moshood Akiolu. He outlined the objectives of the session: to identify gaps, challenges, and potential areas for legislative reform to improve the effectiveness of anti-corruption agencies.

Akiolu stated, “Today’s meeting is intended to foster an open dialogue and leverage the collective expertise here. We aim to address issues such as increasing transparency, streamlining reporting mechanisms, enhancing inter-agency cooperation, and boosting public engagement and awareness.”

He emphasized the need for a collaborative effort among all stakeholders and assured that his committee would provide legislative support and oversight to strengthen the ICPC and CCB’s capabilities.

Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN, Chairman of the ICPC, represented by Director of Legal Services Henry Emore, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to address the committee. Aliyu highlighted the ICPC’s commitment to maintaining high standards of transparency, accountability, and justice despite challenges.

From June 2023 to June 2024, the ICPC filed 67 cases involving corruption, with 17 convictions so far. Aliyu noted that delays in the judiciary process have impacted the speed of convictions. The ICPC has also seized and forfeited assets worth billions of naira and recovered over N73.9 billion and $20,000, which have been redirected to the national treasury.

Aliyu acknowledged challenges such as limited resources and legal loopholes and stressed the need for ongoing adaptation and technological innovation in investigating corruption. He reassured that the ICPC is committed to improving its processes to foster a culture of integrity and accountability.

The meeting concluded with a question-and-answer session where lawmakers and ICPC management discussed the Commission’s operational activities.
