How Can Your Husband Be Cleaning While You Sleep? — Mother Challenges Daughter Over House Chores
A married woman has sparked conversations about household responsibilities after sharing how her mother reacted upon discovering that her husband regularly handles the cleaning in their home while she takes care of other domestic duties.
The woman explained that her mother had been staying with her family for five weeks and was unaware of the arrangement she and her husband had maintained since getting married.
According to her account, her husband takes responsibility for cleaning their home, particularly on Saturdays, while she prepares breakfast, cooks for the weekend and attends to other household responsibilities. She said the arrangement had worked peacefully for them without any complaints.
However, her mother’s first Saturday visit exposed their routine and triggered an unexpected reaction from the older woman.
Recounting the incident, the woman said her mother woke up one morning and found her son-in-law cleaning the house while her daughter was still asleep. She reportedly asked him whether his wife had gone to work, but he explained that she was still sleeping.
The response reportedly angered the mother, who questioned why her daughter had not woken up to assist her husband.
The woman recalled that her mother asked, “How can your husband be cleaning while you’re sleeping?”
Surprised by the reaction, she responded by asking what exactly she was expected to help her husband with, prompting another expression of displeasure from her mother.
Her husband eventually intervened and explained that he genuinely enjoyed cleaning and that sharing household responsibilities in that manner was normal in their marriage.
Although her mother appeared to accept his explanation, the woman said she continued receiving disapproving looks from her whenever Saturday cleaning took place.
Defending her position, the woman insisted that she was not lazy but simply enjoyed a household arrangement that worked for both her and her husband.
She explained that her mother appeared to hold a traditional belief that a good wife should wake up early, clean the house and supervise domestic chores, even when her husband was willing to handle them.
The woman’s experience has highlighted differing generational expectations about marriage, gender roles and the sharing of domestic responsibilities, with her account drawing attention to the importance of couples establishing arrangements that suit their household.
