How INEC Commits To Secure Elections In Edo, Ondo, And Anambra

INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, has assured Nigerians that all upcoming elections in Edo, Ondo, Anambra, and other states preceding the 2027 general election will be conducted with transparency and credibility. Speaking during a two-day retreat for 10 Resident Electoral Officers, Yakubu emphasized the commission’s commitment to reforming electoral processes in Nigeria.

He disclosed that INEC has formulated 142 recommendations aimed at enhancing electoral integrity, with reforms categorized for implementation through administrative actions, legislative amendments, and engagements with stakeholders. Yakubu underscored the importance of these reforms in improving Nigeria’s electoral framework and ensuring fair elections.

Regarding the forthcoming Edo election on September 21, Yakubu acknowledged challenges, including the loss of 4,000 Bimodal Voters Accreditation System (BVAS) machines to floods. However, he assured that measures have been taken to replace and relocate machines to facilitate smooth voting processes.

Looking ahead to elections in Osun, Ekiti, Anambra, and the FCT in 2026, Yakubu highlighted INEC’s ongoing innovations aimed at enhancing election credibility through administrative actions and legislative engagements.

Yakubu urged patience from Nigerians regarding the release of the reform recommendations report, promising that it would be made public upon its completion. He reiterated INEC’s commitment to transparency and urged continued support and engagement from all stakeholders in the electoral process.
