Umahi’s appointment comes as no shock to those familiar with his transformative impact on Ebonyi, one of Nigeria’s historically underfunded states. Despite receiving the lowest allocations from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC), Umahi, a seasoned civil engineer, redefined governance and infrastructure development in the state, garnering admiration and setting a standard for other governors in the Southeast (SE) region.
His legacy in Ebonyi provides a glimpse into his potential as the Minister for Works. While the state was grappling with financial constraints, Umahi’s administration demonstrated that with visionary leadership, commitment, and a hands-on approach, significant change is possible. King David Medical University, Uburu: A Gem in the Southeast
Located in Uburu, the King David Medical University stands as a testament to state-of-the-art educational infrastructure. Touted as possessing the finest facilities in the Southeast, and potentially across Nigeria, this state-built institution is a beacon of excellence.
One of its distinctive features is its in-house oxygen production plant, a rarity in academic institutions, underscoring its commitment to advanced medical practices and research. Furthermore, the university is equipped to carry out kidney dialysis, placing it at the forefront of medical innovation.
In a significant move, the university was recently transitioned to a federal institution after its handover to the Federal Government, further amplifying its stature in the academic and medical community.
Ebonyi International Airport: From Vision to Reality
Initiated in 2020, the construction of Ebonyi International Airport marked the beginning of a promising venture. By the first quarter of 2023, specifically by May, the blueprint had transformed into a tangible reality, signifying the state’s rapid infrastructural progress.
Ebonyi State School of Nursing and Midwifery: A Beacon of Excellence in the South East
Renowned as the premier School of Nursing in the South East, the institution boasts not only of its comprehensive curriculum but also its impressive infrastructure. The meticulously designed interiors, adorned with tiles, not only enhance its aesthetics but also ensure easy maintenance, reflecting a thoughtful approach to creating an optimal learning environment.
Ebonyi State’s Olympic Stadium in Progress
Initiated in 2021, the construction of the Olympic Stadium in Ebonyi State is rapidly advancing towards its completion. The governor has even shared a glimpse of the grandeur awaiting the state, hinting at inaugurating the stadium as the venue for the swearing-in ceremony.
Under the leadership of Dave Umahi, Ebonyi State has exhibited fiscal excellence, registering a staggering 91% growth in its IGR, outpacing all other South East states. Given the immense infrastructural requirements in the South East, it’s imperative for all SE states to bolster their IGR to cater to these needs independently, without relying on FAAC.
In 2019, under Dave Umahi’s leadership, a substantial N7.5 billion was allocated for the revamping and modernization of schools throughout Ebonyi State. This investment has paid off, with the state consistently performing impressively in WAEC results. Remarkably, for the first time, Ebonyi secured a spot among the top 5 states in WAEC performance.
Under Dave Umahi’s leadership, Ebonyi State experienced a significant reduction in its poverty index, outpacing states such as Plateau and Zamfara. While in 2015, Ebonyi was ranked among the top three poorest states, by 2022, it had made substantial progress, moving down to the 9th position and on track to exit the top 10 list of the most impoverished states.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, 13 general hospitals were refurbished and equipped. Additionally, before the outbreak of Covid-19, two general hospitals were renovated in just 20 days.
