In a press statement, HURIWA emphasized its ongoing support for the Nigerian government’s efforts to restore peace in the South-East but expressed deep concern over the methods used by security agencies. The group alleged that these methods have led to the indiscriminate killing of innocent Igbo youths under the guise of targeting IPOB members.
HURIWA criticized the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) for its inability to provide an impartial assessment, advocating instead for a high-powered investigative team from the UNHRC. The group also condemned the killing of security personnel and attacks on national security assets but questioned the clarity regarding the perpetrators.
The statement highlighted the confusion surrounding the identity of those responsible for attacks, noting that while the Nigerian Armed Forces often blame IPOB, the official IPOB leadership denies involvement. Furthermore, some factions within IPOB that are disavowed by the mainstream group have claimed responsibility, underscoring the need for a comprehensive investigation to uncover the truth.
