HURIWA Defends Fubara’s Mandate In Rivers State Crisis

HURIWA insisted that Governor Fubara’s plans to conduct local government elections should not be undermined by the previous local government chairmen, who were appointed by the former governor, Nyesom Wike. The rights group strongly condemned the notion of local government officials openly challenging the authority of the sitting governor, labeling it as both ethically and constitutionally wrong.

In a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, HURIWA urged the governor to move forward with the planned elections, stressing that this step is crucial to comply with the judgment of the Supreme Court.

The group further remarked, “It is illegal for members of the Rivers State House of Assembly to publicly defect from the PDP, the party under which they were elected, to the APC. The federal executive’s apparent support for actions that undermine democracy in Rivers State is concerning, especially when considering instances where federal-controlled police have acted unconstitutionally.”

“One significant example was the police takeover of local government secretariats, preventing even appointed officials from governing. This action occurred before the Supreme Court’s ruling, despite the fact that Governor Fubara’s appointments were made within his constitutional authority,” the statement added.

HURIWA also called on the Inspector General of Police to ensure that the Rivers State Police Command remains loyal to the Constitution and the duly elected governor, who is currently Governor Fubara.

The association stressed that a democratically elected governor must be allowed to govern without interference, regardless of how they came to power. “Fubara won the election and should be permitted to lead and continue the development of Rivers State in a stable manner, as he has been doing,” HURIWA stated.

Finally, the group urged all stakeholders to prevent any destabilization of Rivers State, warning that chaos in the state would have serious consequences for the entire South-South region. “As one of the wealthiest states in the region, Rivers State plays a crucial role in the economic stability of the South-South, and any disruption to its governance could destabilize the entire area,” HURIWA concluded.
