HYPPADEC MD Calls For Legal Action Against Boat Passengers Without Life Jackets

Abubakar Yelwa, the Managing Director of the National Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (HYPPADEC), has called for legislation to criminalize the absence of life jackets among boat passengers. He emphasized this during a stakeholders’ meeting on the agency’s Youth Transformation Programme (YTP) held in Ilorin. Represented by Dr. Mahmud Muhammed, Director of Community and Rural Development at HYPPADEC, Yelwa recounted a tragic incident where 130 lives were lost in a single boat accident within a riverine community. He highlighted HYPPADEC’s efforts, including the training of over 5,000 youths under the YTP, with 800 beneficiaries in Kwara State set to receive starter packs for launching their businesses and potentially creating employment opportunities.

Yelwa stressed the importance of beneficiaries using these starter packs responsibly and not selling them off. The starter packs, valued at over N255 million, encompass training in various vocations such as tailoring and fish farming.
