I Am A Changed Person Now” – Faruk Lawan Reflects After Five Years In Prison
Lawan, who served a five-year sentence for accepting a $3 million bribe from oil magnate Femi Otedola, made the statement during a visit to the Shanono/Bagwai Federal Constituency on Saturday, surrounded by a convoy of political supporters. He said, “Today, I am a better person, and I thank God for everything. My visit is not political; it is to offer condolences, sympathize with the sick, and pay respects to our fathers and traditional leaders.”
Lawan further explained that he is currently not aligned with any political group and is now independent in his political journey, describing himself as “freelancing.”
He was welcomed by the District Head of Bagwai in Bagwai Local Government, Alhaji Nura Shehu Ahmad, the Magajin Rafi of Kano, who referred to Lawan’s time in prison as “a blessing in disguise” for both him and his supporters.
The District Head added, “Many of us who were once your adversaries have now become your loyal supporters, with a better understanding of who Faruk Lawan truly is and his dedication to his people.” He also praised Lawan for his continued support during his imprisonment, stating, “Even in prison, Faruk Lawan stayed connected with us, supported those in need, and checked on everyone. We truly appreciate and value you.”
