During an interview on African Voices Changemakers, CNN’s popular magazine program, the ‘Gladiator’ star expressed his frustration over underpayment.
“I’m still struggling financially. After over two decades in the filmmaking industry, with two Oscar nominations and numerous blockbuster films, I find myself struggling to make a living. I am definitely underpaid,” he stated.
On the issue of racism in Hollywood, Hounsou shared his experience, saying, “I was nominated for a Golden Globe, yet they overlooked me for the Oscars because they assumed I had just arrived from abroad. Despite my achievements, they didn’t consider me as a serious actor deserving of respect.”
He further noted, “This idea of diversity still has a long way to go. Systemic racism isn’t going to change overnight.
