The Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has disclosed that his recent New Year message addressing the state of the nation has triggered threats to his life, family, and close associates.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

During a media chat last Thursday, Obi expressed concern over the deteriorating political, economic, and security conditions in the country, which he said contrast sharply with the claims of progress by President Tinubu’s administration.

Obi noted that Nigeria has fallen significantly from being Africa’s largest economy in 2014, with a GDP of $574 billion and a per capita income of over $3,500, to now ranking fourth on the continent.

Reacting to Obi’s remarks, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), through its Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, dismissed the claims as misleading. Morka accused Obi of becoming Nigeria’s “leading doomsayer,” asserting that the country is making significant strides in its economic recovery.

In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, Peter Obi revealed that Morka had accused him of “crossing the line” and warned of potential consequences.

Obi, however, stood by his statement, urging anyone who believes he crossed the line to point it out. He reiterated his commitment to maintaining decorum while highlighting his concerns about Nigeria’s drift toward authoritarianism and repression of free speech.

His post read:
“Have I really crossed the line? My New Year message has now led to threats against my life, my family, and those close to me. While I have received various messages, one Mr. Felix Morka accused me of ‘crossing the line’ and warned of consequences.

“I invite anyone to highlight where I crossed the line. I remain committed to speaking truthfully and respectfully, even as our nation continues to slide into undemocratic practices.

“We are increasingly transforming into an authoritarian and repressive regime, where freedom of expression is systematically being eroded.”
