Veteran entertainer and activist Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, has revealed that he played a key role in connecting former President Olusegun Obasanjo with comedian and content creator Isbae U for an appearance on the popular YouTube programme Curiosity Made Me Ask.

Charly Boy made the disclosure in a post on X on Monday while reflecting on Obasanjo’s participation in the programme, which attracted attention for its unconventional format and humorous exchange between the former president and the young host.

According to Bush Radio Academy, Charly Boy said the appearance demonstrated how providing opportunities could enable young Nigerians to showcase their creativity while also creating platforms where older generations can interact with younger people.

He argued that support for young people does not always have to come in the form of financial assistance, noting that providing opportunities can sometimes have a more lasting impact.

“Sometimes, the greatest thing you fit give a young person no be money. Na opportunity. Look at wetin happen when Baba entered Bae U’s world,” he wrote.

Charly Boy also praised Obasanjo for embracing the informal nature of the programme despite the considerable difference between his background and Isbae U’s style of presentation.

He noted that the former president did not maintain a strictly formal demeanour during the interview but instead engaged with the host and participated in the humorous exchanges.

“A man of his age and experience sat down with a young man whose style dey completely different from wetin he is used to. Baba no just sit there looking serious. He matched the energy, played along and showed Nigerians another side of himself,” Charly Boy said.

He subsequently disclosed that he was instrumental in bringing the former president and the young content creator together, saying he believed in the young people behind the programme enough to help create the connection.

“And who helped make that connection happen? Charly Boy. Fada believed in the young people behind that show enough to pull Baba into their space,” he stated.

During the interview, Isbae U humorously described Obasanjo as his former employee, joking that he paid the former president’s salary, provided food and covered his accommodation at Aso Rock during Obasanjo’s time in office between 1999 and 2007.

Obasanjo played along with the joke and also admitted during the programme that he was unfamiliar with some contemporary Nigerian entertainers, including Don Jazzy, Poco Lee and Carter Efe.

The exchange generated attention because of the unusual interaction between the former president and the younger content creator, with the programme providing a relaxed setting for Obasanjo to engage with a younger audience.
