Speaking during his screening at the National Assembly on Thursday, Amupitan firmly denied any involvement with the legal teams of opposition parties.
Responding to a question from Senate President Godswil Akpabio, he said:
“I was not part of it.”
Amupitan also dismissed speculations linking him to President Bola Tinubu’s legal team during the tribunal, describing the claims as baseless.
He clarified:
“Before coming here, I obtained the certified true copies of the appearances at both the tribunal and the Supreme Court. My name is not there. I never took part in any of the proceedings.”
His nomination to succeed Professor Mahmood Yakubu as INEC Chairman had stirred controversy, with critics questioning his neutrality and independence due to the circulating allegations.
Following a thorough screening session, however, the Senate confirmed his appointment, officially naming him the sixth substantive Chairman of INEC, succeeding Yakubu, whose tenure has now come to an end.
