Announcing the result in the early hours of Sunday, the Returning Officer, Abiodun Oluwadare, revealed that Oyekunle secured 18,404 votes, defeating Adewale Olatunji of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who polled 8,312 votes.
Other candidates recorded minimal votes:
-
Femi Akin-Alamu (ADC) – 88 votes
-
Olabisi Olajumoke (APGA) – 40 votes
-
Hammed Badmus (ZLP) – 18 votes
Oluwadare declared: “Oyekunle of PDP, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby returned elected.”
Ahead of the poll, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde had described Oyekunle as “trustworthy, competent, and the best choice to represent the constituency.” Speaking during the PDP campaign flag-off at Bodija Market, Ibadan, Makinde said the victory would further “reinforce the dominance of the PDP in the state.”
The Ibadan North seat became vacant following the death of APC lawmaker Olaide Akinremi on July 10. Akinremi, a ranking member of the House of Representatives, was until his passing the Chairman of the House Committee on Science and Research.
Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has called for the cancellation of the Shanono/Bagwai State Constituency by-election and the Ghari Constituency rerun in Kano State. In a statement signed by APC National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka, the party alleged widespread violence and disruption by armed thugs, insisting that over 200 suspects were arrested during the exercise.
The APC maintained that proceeding with the elections under such conditions of “violent voter intimidation and brigandage” would undermine free and fair polls, and urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to order fresh elections in the affected areas.
