ICPC And JAMB Investigate Alleged Fake Admissions At University In Ogun State

Reports from PUNCH Metro indicate that JAMB officials, upon detecting anomalies in their admission portal, uncovered approximately 230 counterfeit admission letters attributed to IMSU.

Prompted by these findings, JAMB alerted ICPC officials to the suspected fraudulent admissions linked to the university. Subsequently, the ICPC initiated an investigation, leading to the interrogation of implicated staff members. Some arrests were reportedly made, including individuals associated with the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Registrar, and Director of Admissions.

Fabian Benjamin, spokesperson for JAMB, confirmed the arrests, stating that nearly ten university employees were apprehended. He further disclosed that during a joint operation with ICPC, the 230 students named in the fake admission letters were also questioned. Benjamin emphasized the use of an automated admission process to monitor student progression from admission to graduation, highlighting discrepancies noticed during IMSU’s admission monitoring.

Benjamin cautioned against accepting admissions outside the Central Admission Processing System (CAPS), stressing that admissions not approved through JAMB should be rejected. He described affected students as complicit in the admission racketeering scheme and advised against reliance on institutional admission letters.

The ICPC, represented by spokesperson Demola Bakare, affirmed ongoing investigations and the intent to prosecute those involved. Bakare detailed the focus on admission racketeering, stemming from compromised access to JAMB’s CAPS, which led to the issuance of counterfeit admission letters. Although individuals were detained briefly, investigations continue, with plans to proceed to court.

An anonymous source, shedding light on the matter, highlighted a recurring pattern of admission fraud within IMSU. Allegations included the sale of admissions to unqualified candidates, particularly those from affluent backgrounds. The source implicated key university officials, alleging their involvement in the racketeering operation.

Ralph Njokuobi, IMSU’s spokesperson, acknowledged the investigations but emphasized the presumption of innocence until proven guilty. He noted ongoing interrogations at the ICPC and reiterated the university’s commitment to cooperate with authorities.

In response to the counterfeit admissions, IMSU publicly announced the invalidity of the 230 admissions and disassociated itself from the affected individuals.

The investigation continues, shedding light on systemic challenges within Nigeria’s educational sector and underscoring the need for robust oversight and integrity measures
