If I Were Peter Obi, I’d Return To PDP!” – Sowunmi Fires Bold Advice

Segun Sowunmi, a prominent figure within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has urged Peter Obi to consider returning to the PDP ahead of the 2027 presidential race, suggesting that it would bolster his chances of success.

During an interview on Seun Okinbaloye’s ‘Mic On Podcast,’ Sowunmi said Obi—who contested the 2023 presidential election under the Labour Party (LP)—requires a more established political platform to make a viable bid in 2027.

“Looking ahead to 2027, the PDP will open up its process and make nomination forms available. Anyone who believes they have what it takes should step forward,” Sowunmi said.

He further stated that if Obi rejoined the PDP, he could make a persuasive case for the party’s presidential ticket, noting that the PDP was originally birthed by Southern leaders like the late Dr. Alex Ekwueme.

“If I were Peter Obi, I would return to the PDP and push strongly for the presidential ticket. This party was born from the vision of Southern leaders. I don’t see why the Igbo, in partnership with others in the PDP, can’t rally behind him and say, ‘This is our candidate,’” he asserted.

Sowunmi also pointed to Obi’s strong 2023 showing—where he pulled over six million votes without backing from governors or major political powerbrokers—as proof of his grassroots appeal.

He argued that with the support of 12 governors and PDP’s nationwide political structure, Obi’s odds would be greatly improved.

“We’ve had candidates from other regions, but not yet from the South East. Peter Obi has the freedom to make his own choices, but if he brings that energy and momentum into the PDP and emerges as the candidate, I believe he would sweep the South East, South South, Christian North, and North Central,” Sowunmi predicted.
