Former presidential aide Reno Omokri has expressed strong views on virginity and bride price, arguing that it is unfair for a man to pay the bride price of a woman whose virginity was taken by someone else.

In a post shared on his social media page, Omokri claimed that such a practice amounts to punishing the groom, stating:

“It is unjust when a woman gives her virginity freely to a man who is not her husband, only for her parents to later demand a bride price from a different man who intends to marry her. Think about it—what exactly is being paid for? The bride price is not a payment for property. If it were, it would be called ‘woman price.’ The term ‘bride price’ refers to a chaste woman becoming a bride.”

He further referenced scripture to support his argument, quoting Genesis 24:67:

“Then Isaac brought her into the tent of Sarah his mother and took Rebekah, and she became his wife.”

According to Omokri, this verse demonstrates that the act of sexual union itself constituted marriage, as there was no formal ceremony involved.

He continued:

“Many don’t realize that biblically, intercourse with a woman makes her your wife. That’s the context in which Rebekah became Isaac’s wife. ‘Took her’ is not metaphorical.”

Omokri defended his controversial stance against anticipated backlash, asserting:

“I don’t care who insults me. My duty is to live by God’s standards, not human expectations.”

He also warned of broader societal issues, claiming:

“We, as Black people, must acknowledge a painful truth: we are the only race with communities where more babies are aborted than born. Virginity must be honored, not dismissed. If it didn’t matter, why did God choose Mary? Because she was a virgin.”

Omokri concluded by urging society to return to traditional values, arguing that:

“Many of Africa’s problems—from high HIV/AIDS rates to overpopulation—stem from abandoning the principle of reserving sex for marriage. Rewarding chastity is essential to our progress.”
