Under the directive, such vehicles are to be stopped and impounded as part of efforts to strengthen national security.
According to reports, the order was issued on Tuesday following concerns over the increasing number of vehicles on Nigerian roads without proper identification.
The police chief noted that some motorists deliberately conceal or tamper with their number plates in an attempt to evade identification and accountability, describing the practice as illegal and unacceptable.
Disu emphasized that vehicle registration is not merely administrative but a critical component of national security and crime prevention.
He explained that criminals often exploit unregistered or untraceable vehicles to carry out kidnappings, armed robbery, and other violent crimes, making it difficult for security agencies to track them.
As part of the directive, he instructed Commissioners of Police, tactical commanders, and all police units nationwide to intensify surveillance and enforcement operations within their jurisdictions.
He further stressed that the enforcement must be applied uniformly, without exception or preferential treatment.
The IGP warned that any vehicle found without valid number plates, or with concealed or tampered plates, will be seized and dealt with in accordance with the law.
He also urged vehicle owners to ensure full compliance with registration requirements, warning that failure to do so would attract strict penalties.
