The tragic incident, which occurred along the Dambo-Ebuchi waterways of the River Niger in Kupa Local Government Area, involved over 160 passengers. As of now, 24 individuals have been rescued, but many others remain missing.

In a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the IGP expressed his condolences to the government and people of Kogi State, particularly the affected families, following the November 29, 2024 disaster. He emphasized the gravity of the situation and vowed to take swift action.

To ensure a comprehensive understanding of the incident, the IGP has tasked the Force Marine officer with leading a detailed investigation into the cause of the accident. The investigation aims to identify contributing factors and implement measures to prevent future accidents on the nation’s waterways. The IGP also emphasized that the findings would contribute to improving safety standards and emergency response procedures for water transport across Nigeria.

Egbetokun reassured Kogi residents and the public that the police force is fully committed to working with relevant agencies to locate and rescue the missing passengers. He also urged boat operators, waterway managers, and other stakeholders to work closely with the Force Marine Department to strengthen and enforce vital safety protocols.

The IGP reiterated the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to improving waterway safety, ensuring justice for victims, and preventing further incidents through proactive measures and collaborations with other key stakeholders.
