IGP Urged To Investigate Police Officers Accused Of Extorting N3 Million From Ghana Returnee

Isaac, a resident of Nguru Nworie in Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State, made the appeal to journalists in Owerri on Friday. He reported that he and two friends were stopped by police officers at the Udi axis in Bayelsa State. The officers allegedly forced him to transfer N3 million to them after physically assaulting him and threatening to shoot.

Isaac, who was in Nigeria for a friend’s traditional wedding, said the officers demanded that he unlock his phone. Despite his reminder that the IGP had advised against allowing police access to personal devices, he was beaten. The officers, who handcuffed Isaac and his friends, drove them to an unknown location, continuing the assault and threatening their lives.

Upon accessing Isaac’s phone and discovering a N10 million bank alert, the officers escalated their threats, demanding N6 million. Fearing for his life, Isaac negotiated and eventually transferred N3 million to the officers—N2 million to an account under the name Yusuf Mustafa and N1 million to Jerry Ventures. He was then released at Ahoada in Rivers State.

Isaac has provided bank statements and the account details used for the transfers. He has consulted a lawyer, who has reached out to the Police Public Relations Officer in Bayelsa State. Isaac is calling for his money to be returned and for the IGP to identify the corrupt officers responsible. “I want justice and for the IGP to locate these officers, who are tarnishing the image of the Nigeria Police Force,” he said.

Bayelsa State Police Command spokesperson Musa Muhammed stated he was unaware of the incident when contacted.
