Immediate Probe Ordered By Interior Minister Over Allegations Of Poor Inmate Nutrition In Calabar Prison

This directive comes in response to a video circulating on Facebook that alleges inmates at the prison are subjected to inhumane treatment, including being served poorly cooked meals.

In a statement released on Sunday, September 1, 2024, the minister’s media aide, Babatunde Alao, emphasized that any shortcomings in food quality, sanitation, or inmate welfare will not be tolerated.

“The Honourable Minister of Interior, Hon. (Dr.) Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has expressed deep concern over a disturbing video report on Facebook, which claims that inmates at Afokang Custodial Centre in Calabar are enduring inhumane conditions, such as being served poorly cooked beans for breakfast,” the statement read.

“The Minister regards this incident as a severe violation of the standards of care and dignity that inmates are entitled to. He has ordered a thorough and urgent investigation into the matter, with a commitment to holding those responsible accountable.”

The statement further warned that lapses in the quality of food, sanitation, and overall welfare of inmates will not be overlooked, stressing that the custodial service must ensure inmates are treated with the respect and dignity they deserve.

“The Minister of Interior will not tolerate any form of mistreatment or neglect of individuals in custody,” the statement added.

The findings of the investigation will be made public, and appropriate disciplinary actions will be taken against those found culpable.
