Imo State: Catholic Priest, Rev. Father Emmanuel Azubuike, Kidnapped By GunmenRev. Fr. Emmanuel Azubuike, the parish priest of St. Theresa’s Catholic Parish in Obollo, Isiala Mbano, Imo State, has reportedly been abducted by unknown gunmen.

Church officials confirmed that Fr. Azubuike was kidnapped along the Ayayi community in Obollo while returning home from an assignment late on Tuesday evening.

The Catholic Diocese of Okigwe issued a statement confirming the incident and requesting prayers for Fr. Azubuike’s safe return.

In a statement signed by the Chancellor/Secretary of the Diocese, Very Rev. Fr. Princewill Iwuanyanwu, it was revealed: “I am directed to inform you that one of our priests, Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Azubuike, was kidnapped this evening, Tuesday, November 5, 2024, at about 6 p.m.”

The statement further noted, “Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Azubuike, who was ordained on September 27, 2014, is the parish priest of St. Theresa’s Catholic Parish, Obollo, Isiala Mbano LGA, Imo State. He was abducted along Aliyi community in Obollo, Isiala Mbano, Imo State, while returning from an assignment. We solicit your fervent prayers for his safe return, trusting in your goodwill and solidarity.”

Obollo Ward Councillor, David Ajaero, confirmed the priest’s abduction, describing Fr. Azubuike as a “good man” and appealing for his immediate release. Local residents of Obollo have also taken to social media to demand his safe return.

The Imo State Police spokesperson, Henry Okoye, confirmed that investigations were underway. He stated, “The CP has set up a high-powered investigation team to look into this matter and ensure the possible rescue of the Catholic priest, as well as the apprehension of the suspects.
