In a 2022 interview marking Nigeria’s 62nd independence anniversary, Tinubu revealed his preference for the former national anthem, ‘Nigeria, We Hail Thee’, over the current one, ‘Arise Oh Compatriots’. He expressed his desire to reinstate the old anthem if given the opportunity.

Reflecting on his sentiments during the interview, Tinubu said: “In fact, if I have my way, I would bring back our old, first national anthem. That described us much better. I don’t know why we changed it. It is about service, diversity, commitment to values, and nation-building.”

‘Nigeria, We Hail Thee’ served as Nigeria’s national anthem from independence in 1960 until it was replaced in 1978. Authored by British expatriate Lillian Jean Williams and composed by Frances Berda, it became the nation’s first anthem on October 1, 1960.
