He has requested that they withdraw the lawsuit they filed against the state government. This withdrawal would enable constructive discussions and the search for a lasting solution to the matter without being hampered by legal proceedings.
The conflict among the royal fathers emerged after the state House of Assembly passed the new TRC law (Cap 155), which the governor subsequently approved.
The law aimed to grant a lifetime presidency to the Oku Ibom Ibibio, the largest ethnic group in the state, disregarding the established rotational provision among all the paramount rulers in the state.
In response to the escalating tensions caused by the new law, the governor held a meeting with the TRC at the Executive Chambers and encouraged them to set aside emotional considerations and engage in a rational discussion to chart a path forward.
He also criticized the royal fathers for rejecting previous invitations to peace meetings, labeling their actions as not only insubordinate but also setting a potentially damaging precedent of insubordination within the leadership framework.
The governor’s statement emphasized his commitment to ending strife and fostering unity in the state. He recounted a previous meeting scheduled for September 23, 2023, which the affected Paramount Rulers did not attend. He stated that had the meeting taken place, it could have prevented the current tensions.
Governor Eno expressed his willingness to engage in a constructive dialogue and work towards a peaceful and unified resolution to the issue.
However, he pointed out that the lawsuit presents an obstacle, as discussing the matter in-depth would be legally constrained.
He urged the royal fathers to remove this legal impediment, cease any media or politically motivated disputes, and return to the table for an amicable resolution that satisfies all parties involved.
