Obi made this appeal during a visit to Jigawa following the tragic incident in Majiya town, located in the Taura Local Government Area. The explosion occurred when a tanker overturned, spilling petrol, which locals began to scoop before the deadly blast ensued.
Describing the incident as a “national disaster,” Obi expressed heartfelt sympathy for the victims and committed to providing financial support to those affected.
In a message shared on X, he emphasized the urgent need for intervention to assist the victims and their families, many of whom were young people in their prime. “As planned, I visited Dutse, Jigawa State, to commiserate with Governor Alhaji Umar Namadi Dan Modi and the people over the tragic petroleum tanker incident that claimed over 180 lives, with more than 80 individuals hospitalized,” he wrote.
Obi noted, “This is a national tragedy. I pray for the departed souls and offer strength to their bereaved families. I also pledge to donate to the victims and appreciate the government’s efforts to alleviate suffering and support those in the hospital.”
He urged tanker drivers to exercise greater caution and called on governments at all levels to provide sources of livelihood to prevent circumstances that could endanger lives.
“The increasing frequency of such tragedies in our nation is alarming and requires special prayers for divine intervention. Relevant stakeholders must implement infrastructure and laws to help avert these incidents. Tragedies arise when necessary human actions to mitigate risks are not taken,” he added.
