The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared the recommencement of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) in Edo and Ondo states. This initiative aims to facilitate the registration of eligible citizens who are not yet registered voters.
The decision comes ahead of the scheduled governorship elections in Edo and Ondo states on September 21 and November 16, 2024, respectively. Professor Mahmood Yakubu, the Chairman of INEC, disclosed this development during a consultative meeting with political party leaders in preparation for the 2024 governorship elections in both states.
Yakubu emphasized that the CVR process is exclusively for new registrants and individuals seeking to transfer their registration. Notably, registered voters are reminded not to attempt re-registration, as it constitutes an illegal act.
To ensure efficiency, the registration exercise will be conducted at ward levels and state headquarters instead of local government area offices and few designated centers as previously done. The CVR in Edo and Ondo states will occur concurrently from May 27 to June 5, 2024, between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm daily, including weekends.
In light of the proximity to the governorship elections, INEC has opted for 192 ward registration centers in Edo State and 203 centers in Ondo State, in addition to state offices in Benin City and Akure. This decision aims to provide accessible registration venues for citizens. Due to time constraints, there will be no online pre-registration option available in the two states.
Each registration center will be staffed by two officials, comprising regular INEC staff and members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). INEC plans to commence the training of at least 794 officials for the exercise shortly.
The locations of the registration centers and other pertinent information have been compiled into a detailed 28-page document for dissemination during the meeting. Additionally, the same information will be uploaded to INEC’s website and social media platforms for public awareness in the near future.
