Iniesta Urges Barcelona To Sign Victor Osimhen As Lewandowski’s Heir
Former Barcelona captain Andrés Iniesta has urged the Spanish giants to sign Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen, describing the Nigerian international as the ideal long-term successor to Robert Lewandowski.
Barcelona have intensified their search for a new centre-forward following Lewandowski’s move to Major League Soccer side Chicago Fire. The Catalan club had previously considered both Osimhen and Julián Álvarez but reportedly cooled interest in the Nigerian over concerns surrounding the transfer fee and his wage demands.
Speaking in an interview with NTV Spor, Iniesta advised Barcelona against deploying teenage sensation Lamine Yamal as a central striker, insisting the club should instead recruit an established goalscorer.
He also urged sporting director Deco to strengthen the team’s attacking options, naming Osimhen as his preferred choice.
“Lamine Yamal is an exceptional player, but I wouldn’t use him as a number nine. If Ferran Torres leaves, I would strongly advise Deco to sign a striker,” Iniesta said.
“I don’t think Atlético Madrid will allow Julián Álvarez to leave. I would recommend Victor Osimhen. He’s a fantastic goalscorer and one of the best players to replace Robert Lewandowski.”
Osimhen remains one of Europe’s most highly rated strikers after another impressive season, attracting interest from several top clubs despite Barcelona’s earlier reservations over the financial demands of a potential deal.
Meanwhile, Turkish champions Galatasaray, who were previously open to offers for the Nigerian forward, are now reportedly prepared to retain him instead of approving a transfer.
